CMCR9 (CM1) Programmes 1972-78

CMI South Wales

CM1 in the early 70s, believed to be an MOTD at a football ground in South Wales.

(Pictures: John Abbott)

CM1 The Magnolias for GW.

Outside The Magnolias on 'Gardeners World'. Note- early style number  plate below bumper, chrome wheel trims, and no crest yet on the  radiator filler cover.

The Magnolias was the home of Percy Thrower, who introduced Gardeners World for several years, his garden being used as the main location.

GW Camera Platform

Two of the cameras are on a scaffolding platform, which would have been built by the riggers. Note the block and tackle for lifting the cameras and mountings, and the rather precarious wooden ladder.  The other two cameras are safely on the ground. Today they would probably use a drone for those overhead shots.

CMI vision crew

The vision crew at work. The lighting console is still in place- we think this was removed before C9 went to Manchester, replaced by the cupboard that is still there.

(Crew: John Allinson is to the right, can anyone identify other crew members? The gentleman standing (centre) would appear to be the Vision Supervisor.)

CM1 Vision area

CM1 vision area during a break. The extra camera bay is in position although possibly not active. The Pye colour monitors are still present- so maybe picture is around 1973? Probably taken at MOTD shown below.

CM1 N/S

Rigging the off-air aerial at a location. This might be at the same MOTD as above, or possibly at Silverstone for motor racing.

Off air receivers are necessary on live programmes to synchronise the timing of the programme or insert start, especially if talkback from the studio failed. The off-air signal could also be used for phasing and pulse timing against the on board sync pulse generator.
